    LMU - A University With A Mission

    • Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 by a group of educators, including General Oliver Otis Howard who also founded Howard University in Washington, D.C.
    • Howard was inspired to join the group when he visited the Cumberland Gap region after the Civil War and was reminded of a discussion he had with President Lincoln during the War. The President suggested that he hoped someone would do something for the loyal people of the region after the War
    • On President Lincoln's birthday in 1897, Lincoln Memorial University was chartered as a living memorial to our 16th president. Since that time, LMU has sought to provide educational opportunities, development of community leadership, and the expansion of economic and social forces in Appalachia and beyond
    • The University strives to give students a foundation for a more productive life by upholding the principles of Abraham Lincoln's life: a dedication to individual liberty, responsibility, and improvement; a respect for citizenship; recognition of the intrinsic value of high moral and ethical standards; and a belief in a personal God
    • Since its founding, Lincoln Memorial University has grown from a small liberal arts institution to a nationally recognized university with nearly 5,000 students. LMU's main campus in Harrogate, Tennessee. Its law school is located in Knoxville, and it has several other extended sites in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Florida.

Lincoln Memorial University has a fascinating history. It began really in the Civil War when President Lincoln had a conversation with one of his generals, O O Howard, who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. As the years passed, he became a prolific writer of books, a religious leader, and he was often very helpful in raising funds for a worthy cause. He was invited into the Cumberland Gap area, near the confluence of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, and he met a man by the name of Reverend a a Myers, who, with others in the area, believed that higher education was the most important need for the people of Southern Appalachia. And based on that conversation in 1896 a year later, Lincoln Memorial University was founded on Lincoln's birthday to honor his name and his memory.

Of course, it began as a small liberal arts school, but has grown now to a major university in East Tennessee. Their mission is primarily to offer higher education opportunities for the people of Southern Appalachia. Of course, the school has become so popular. One of the many post graduate schools that the university has sponsored in more recent years is our law school here in Knoxville, if our university is truly a living memorial for the 16th President of the United States, one first has to say that Abe Lincoln, above all else, was first a lawyer.

And of course, it is only natural that the university would want to have a thriving law school. And Knoxville is the place for it to be. It's easy to travel to, and we're very fortunate to point to perhaps the best lawyer to ever practice before the bar. Our primary target is provide a legal education for those who desire it in the southern Appalachian region. Nevertheless, we have students beyond that area, we are determined to provide an education in the law that establishes practice ready students. Lincoln memorials, Duncan School of Law is today fully accredited by the American Bar Association, and one of the more attractive schools in the southeast for students to become educated in the law.
